What lies 'Under the Surface'?

Welcome to The Arches Project, where you'll discover what lies 'Under the Surface' by the Thirteen.
Because today 'We are 13'.

It’s time to report some figures from ‘Under the Surface’, an exhibition of mixed media realised by Birmingham Metropolitan College students, which took place in The Arches Project’s huge spaces on 30 June – 3 July.

13

Let’s start from ‘Thirteen’, the name of the students group who created the artwork. These artists have a fine eye for design, as they have attended interactive and visual design course (HND, year 2). Each of them curated their own art installation; all together those installations, coming in succession, made up a kind of artistic itinerary in 13 steps.

2D and 3D

One of the peculiarities of this exhibition was the interaction of different media and the usage of various materials, which resulted in 2 and 3 dimensions work. From written text to visual image, including also electrical equipment (such as old typing keyboard, vinyl player, cassette player, old black and white TV), the result was some sophisticated artwork blocks able to involve the audience by stimulating their curiosity. Emblematic, in this sense, the panel with the invitation ‘Join us’.

Some artwork

Pyramids that have a projection of a video displayed on them, which is cleverly done using mirrors and positioning of the pyramids

Inside a cube that is lighted up with UV lighting, has writing on the wall and a book inside

Piece of art work that was drawn using electronic sketch pad (it took 3 days to complete)

'Look at me'

It's an arrangement of old disused electrical appliances (old typing keyboard, vinyl player, cassette player, old black and white TV) with lights that turn on and off from a sensor that detects movement

'Image and Poem' is part of work (about matching images with the picture), which has a connection with William Wordsworth

'Image for script' is part of work (about matching images with the picture), which has a connection with William Wordsworth

'Image that fits text' is part of work (about matching images with the picture), inspired by William Wordsworth
